Film: The Shore Women present
The Wreck of the Irex
Filmed at Dimbola House
Mon 1 Oct 8pm Doors 7pm £4 (Friends of Quay Arts £3)
Venue: Quay Arts 01983 822490
In January 1890 Irex ran on shore in Scratchell’s Bay, the largest sailing ship ever to be wrecked off the Isle of Wight. The captain and the officers drowned. The dramatic ship-to-shore rescue of the rest of the crew made the front cover of the London Evening News. The Coroner’s enquiry turned up more questions than it answered for local people and the survivors. Encouraged by a grant from the Isle of Wight Economic Partnership the Shore Women investigated the strange circumstances surrounding the disaster. Their extensive research and writing, have led on to school workshops, readings and performance - and now to film. www.shorewomen.org.uk
Film: Ryde Film Society Screening - China Blue
Fri 12 Oct 8pm £4 (£2 members)
Venue: Ryde Studio Theatre at Ryde High School 01983 611705
Shot at the peril of Peled and his crew, this is a meticulously livid exposé of a sweatshop in southern China. Jasmine, 16, is one of the tens of millions of Chinese who have left their rural villages in search of work. At the Lifeng factory, she and the girls snip threads and sew zippers for pennies on the hour (sometimes purchasing “energy medicine” on the street to work all night). They are beholden to a deadbeat boss (Mr. Lam prefers “docile and obedient” female workers) who is himself beholden to the criminally low-balled purchase orders coming in from all over the world, for clients like Levi and Wal-Mart.
2005, 86 mins, USA, Dir: Micha X. Peled, Cert. 12A
